Yes, the colonial past is a whole other element of this...In collège, our son read "Cannibale", the book about the colonial exhibitions in Paris in the early 30s. (Truly horrifying stuff, but a great book). In their classroom discussion, the teacher insisted that French colonialism was purely an economic thing, and racism did not factor into it. I mean, just a stupefying rationale that is widely accepted here.
